Even in a slow economy the average wedding in the US still costs well over $20,000, and if that number feels a bit extreme to you, don't worry, you're not alone. Many brides are now discovering that what a wedding costs doesn't have to be the same as what it's worth, and there are many, many ways to save.
Planning a wedding on a budget isn't about finding a bunch of cheap wedding stuff or becoming an expert bargain hunter (though both can help); it's about managing expectations and, most importantly, planning smarter. There are opportunities to control your budget at every step of your wedding preparations, and the savings can start from the moment you begin envisioning your special day.
If you keep your dreams realistic, plan carefully, and focus on what really matters, you can have the wedding of a lifetime without spending a lifetime paying for it! Here are a few of our favorite cost-saving ideas:
Limit the number of guests.
What's your biggest wedding expense? As you probably guessed from the question, the answer is your guests. The budget-sucking power of your guest list can be deceptive, and each person at your wedding can quickly add up in surprising ways.
It's nice to share your love and make as many people as possible a part of your special day, but think long and hard about whether you really need to invite your mechanic or your second grade teacher. A smaller list allows you to create a more intimate experience that large production weddings simply can't match. Keep your celebration small, simple, and beautiful!
Hold your wedding during a non-peak season.
Yes, there's a reason many couples get married during the late spring and summer months, and in some cases you may not have complete freedom of when to hold your wedding, but if you can, consider scheduling your wedding for "non-peak" seasons like fall, winter, or early spring.
You and your spouse-to-be aren't going to love each other any differently in February or March than you will in June or July, so give the idea some serious thought. You can find nicer venues for less, cut down on travel costs for your guests, and find more ways to save. Also, with fewer vacations (and other weddings) planned during these months, you'll be less likely to cause scheduling conflicts for your most important guests!
You can also find additional savings by holding your celebration at non-peak times of the day or week such as later in evening or even at night. Also consider holding your wedding on a weekday. This will not only help your budget but can get you into some venues that might not otherwise be available!
Hold your wedding at a non-profit or public venue.
While we're on the subject of time and location, think about passing on the country club and looking at public or non-profit options. You can find many unique opportunities for holding your wedding and your reception at public parks, historic landmarks, museums, and more. Very often these venues can provide stunning backdrops unmatched by private locations, and usually at a fraction of the cost. Plus, your wedding will help continue to fund and support these special places.
