About Flowergirl Baskets:
The traditional role of the flower girl is to proceed down the walkway of the church or venue where you are holding your wedding in advance of the bride. She is typically the last person to walk down the aisle before the bride, making this little attendant's arrival almost as anticipated as the bride herself. What your flower girl actually does when she walks down the aisle, however, is up to you. You may choose to have your flower girl leave a path of petals for the bride, but if you're concerned about the mess you can also have her simply carry a bouquet of flowers. The flowergirl basket you choose should, in part, be a reflection of the look of your ceremony and the role you want your flower girl to have during her walk.
The Symbol of the Flower Girl:
According to wedding tradition, the flower girl is a symbol of youth and of young love that will blossom over the years as the marriage matures -- a perfect sentiment for any newlyweds. The reason the flower girl walks down the aisle immediately before the bride, in fact, is to represent how the bride was once a young girl who has blossomed into an adult woman. The symbolism holds true no matter what age the flower girl and bride are, so don't be shy about using older flower girls as well. Even flower girls who are older than the bride are acceptable and common.
Having Multiple Flower Girls at Your Ceremony:
And you don't have to send your flower girl down the aisle alone. We routinely hear "horror stories" of agonized brides who want have more than one little girl in their wedding, but "can't." This is simply not the case. We assure you it is perfectly acceptable to have multiple flower girls at your ceremony. In fact, you can create some pretty unique and special moments when you do!
For instance, you can use matching flowergirl baskets for each girl but fill them with different colored petals to create layers of color on the floor. You can also use coordinating (but not identical) flowergirl baskets, or you can even send one girl down the aisle with a flowergirl basket and have her followed by a second girl with a Personalized Wedding Banner. The choice is entirely up to you!

The flower girl typically wears a white dress, like the bride. This fact tends to make white and ivory flower girl baskets extremely popular, but over the past few years many brides have been branching out into more vibrant and colorful flower girls baskets that match their wedding theme. How a flower girl basket should be carried really depends on the age of the child. This can also be a factor in determining what kind of flower girl basket to use. It may sound a little counter-intuitive, but in general younger or smaller children have a better time handling slightly larger wedding flower girl baskets with a bigger handle. Remember, young children have a tendency to swing their arms and make exaggerated movements -- a larger flower girl basket is easier to grip and keep steady.
If you have an older girl who is able to safely handle smaller items, then feel free to use a smaller, daintier basket made of more delicate or precious materials.
Actually handling a flower girl basket seems like it should be common sense, but keep in mind there's a huge variety of basket designs out there. Some flower girl baskets have a deep center and high sides, but others are literally just a curved bottom with no sides and a handle for carrying. Children can be unpredictable, so you really do need to take your flower girl's size and age into account.
To an extent, choosing a flower girl basket is going to have be a judgment call on your part, so we suggest that you consult your flower girl's parents as well as the flower girl herself before you decide on what type of basket you want to use. It will help her understand the importance of her role and help you minimize the potential for mishaps during the ceremony.
Different Types of Flower Girl Baskets:
Fortunately, for every flower girl there is a unique flowergirl basket to fit the style of your wedding. The many available styles of flowergirl baskets means that finding one that's perfect for defining the look of your wedding won't be difficult. And remember, you can always attach additional decorations, ribbons, charms, or ornaments to your basket for decorative effects that add a more feminine final touch.
White and ivory baskets in particular will make the colors of any flowers or petals you put inside "pop" when your flower girl goes down the aisle. But if you're planning on using a more brightly colored basket, consider making the flowers a complementary color (e.g. a purple flower girl basket with yellow flowers). There are as many possibilities as there are brides, so don't be afraid to break with tradition.
And, finally, it's tradition to let the flower girl keep the flower girl basket she carries as a special keepsake from your wedding. She will treasure her basket for years to come, and it will be a truly beautiful reminder of one of her best childhood memories!
