History of Wedding Garters
While the exact origins remain unclear, there is wide agreement that the wedding garter is one of the oldest still-existing wedding traditions in the world, dating back to the Middle Ages in Europe and pre-Elizabethan England.
One of the oldest accounts of the wedding garter belt holds that the tradition emerged from the widely held belief that possessing a piece of a bride's wedding dress, especially the wedding garter, was a sign of fertility and good luck—a superstition so strong that wedding guests were known to rush the altar and tear apart the bride’s dress immediately after the ceremony!
Other accounts from the same period claim the wedding garter tradition arose from the practice of "witnessing," which held that family members were to accompany the newlyweds to the bedroom on their wedding night to ensure the marriage was consummated. The wedding garter was taken as "proof" that the wedding contract had been fulfilled. Sometimes the bridal garter would then be tossed to a crowd of anxious family members and guests who were actually waiting in the hallway. Whoever caught the bridal garter was said to have good luck.
Over time the practice of witnessing became more symbolic until, in the interest of privacy, it was abandoned almost entirely; but the association of the wedding garter as a token of good fortune has endured. The Arthurian legend of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight even has the Knights of the Round Table wearing garters like arm bands as a sign of solidarity and good luck. During the past few centuries the wedding garter has increasingly been connected to single males, evolving into a tradition where men attempt to catch the bride's wedding garter belt, the masculine equivalent of the bridal bouquet.
The days of witnessing, thankfully, are long behind us and the bride (as well as her dress!) are usually safe from assault, which has allowed for the huge range of bridal garters found today. From tossing garters for the men of the wedding reception, to keepsake garters intended specifically for the bride and no one else, the modern bride is free to coordinate her wedding garter belt with her dress, her wedding theme, with her bridesmaids dresses, or as "something blue." Whether keeping with an old wedding tradition or starting one of her own, the style and purpose of the bridal garter is now as unique as each individual bride. | | | | |
