The Wedding Garter - Today's Traditions
By the advent of the 20th century, "tossing the wedding garter" had become a popular part of the wedding reception and is still widely practiced today. In modern ceremonies the groom, or sometimes the best man, removes the wedding garter from the bride’s thigh. The bride then tosses the garter to the unmarried men in attendance. It is said that the man who catches the garter is destined to be the next person at the wedding to get married. If the recipient is a chronic bachelor, he might regard catching the bridal garter as a blessing or a curse. Regardless of who ends up with the garter, the bridal garter is still generally regarded as a token of good fortune, just as it has been throughout history.
More recently many brides have begun to consider the wedding garter as a precious keepsake, a beautiful part of her dress to be treasured and remembered. To keep with tradition many brides now use a tossing garter—a second and usually less-detailed garter that is placed on the leg just below the main garter. Brides can even buy sets that include both the keepsake garter and the tossing garter as part of a package. The tossing garter allows the bride to throw a token piece of her dress to the crowd without losing or damaging any part of her dress or bridal garter—a far cry from the practices of the Middle Ages!
Modern wedding garters come in all varieties and designs, from average to plus-size garters, and are sometimes a different color than the wedding dress to match bridesmaids dress colors. Bridal garters can also be coordinated with the wedding theme, or can be a specific color for personal or sentimental reasons. Modern brides will also often use a blue garter as the tossing garter to fulfill the "something blue" part of the old wedding rhyme.
