Stationary vs. Stationery
So is it Wedding Stationary or Wedding Stationery? Although they may look similar, stationary and stationery have very different meanings and are among the most commonly confused words in the English language!
Stationary (the one with the "a"), according to Webster's Dictionary, means "not moving or not movable." Think of a stationary bike, for example.
Stationery (the one with the "e"), meanwhile, means "writing materials, paper and envelopes." That's the one you write your invitations on.
It's a good bet that if you're doing some shopping for your big day, then wedding stationary isn't what you're looking for. But don't feel bad if you typed "stationary" into Google before you came here; the two words are so frequently confused that more people actually do online searches for stationary (with an "a") when looking for their invitations and programs than they do for the technically correct stationery!
Different Meanings, Same Word
So why do more of us tend to think of "stationary" when we're thinking of writing a thank you note? The answer may lie in the fact that centuries ago both were the same word! That's right, in the 18th century when mass-produced books were becoming available to the general public for the first time, booksellers were referred to as "stationery sellers" because, unlike many other merchants, they tended to open permanent shops. And like many bookstores today, these merchants also sold writing paper, cards, and writing implements.
Over time the two meanings began to separate until they became two distinct entities. Stationary with an "a" began to refer to things that didn't move while stationery with an "e" continued to refer to many paper products. While the reasons for this aren't entirely clear, it's important to remember that all languages are continuously growing, with new words and meanings being added all the time. It seems likely that "unmoving objects" and "writing paper" were simply too different to be covered by just one word so each meaning got its own version.
Remembering the Difference
Despite all the confusion, remembering which stationa(e)ry you want to use is pretty easy. All you have to do is remember the following schoolhouse trick:
A "pen" has an "e" for "stationery," while "stationary" has an "a" for "staying put."
Keep this little mnemonic in mind and you'll never confuse the two words again. But if you do, don't worry, most of us will still know exactly what you mean! | | | | |
