For many, the ever-faithful dog is an important part of the family often being included in the wedding celebration. If you plan to include your pet in the ceremony, be sure to check that your wedding and/or ceremony locations will allow the dog. Make sure you have a quiet area the dog can rest at times and that water and food are provided. Most of all, make sure a friend or family member is designated as "pet caretaker" and is available nearby if needed to take the dog out of the location for any reason.
Keep in mind that even the friendliest of dogs can become unpredictable when surrounded by a large crowd. At the reception the loud music may also make them nervous. Be sure you know how your dog behaves around a crowd of people, especially small children. If your dog is already shy or very protective of you, he or she may not be suited for participation at the wedding. A "barker" can also be very distracting and the people who can most likely calm the dog are the bride and groom, possibly creating an additional stress in an already-hectic day. If you are concerned about your dog's behavior, consider including them after the dinner at the reception, when the mood is more relaxed.
